«Stauber revisited« Five female artists respond to Jules Stauber’s drawings

The encounter of man and woman was Stauber’s favourite subject. His experimental set-ups on courtship display, eroticism, love and marriage resemble an amorous role play rather than a battle of the sexes: the ladies are voluptuous and like to show, the gentlemen wear suits and have half-bald heads and like to watch. On the basis of this simple formula, Stauber combines observations and erotic fantasies to charming, fondly sensual, often head-on but never malicious duets. With etchings, watercolours and objects, the five artists Hélène Becquelin, Laura Jurt, Gabi Kopp, Lika Nüssli and Corinne Rey (Coco) take up Stauber’s couple pictures and interweave them with the present.
